Curtis Institute of Music Family Concerts Present Mother Goose on November 10

PHILADELPHIA—November 1, 2019—The new season of the Curtis Institute of Music’s popular Family Concert series begins with Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose, in collaboration with the Enchantment Theatre Company on Sunday, November 10 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Curtis’s Gould Rehearsal Hall. Families, actors, and musicians alike will participate in an interactive exploration of Ravel’s music and the stories that inspired him, followed by a full performance of the suite by an ensemble of woodwinds and piano.

Curtis musicians join the Enchantment Theatre Company to take children through a magical, musical world. This participatory program is based on the Mother Goose Suite by Maurice Ravel, which portrays such beloved fairy tales as Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast. A small ensemble comprising woodwinds and piano will introduce audiences to each family of instruments and perform Ravel’s enchanting music. Enchantment Theatre Company actors will use props, magical illusions, and movement to bring the stories to life. This same program will be presented to students at Girard College in a private event on Friday, November 8.

Awakening a sense of wonder in listeners ages 5 to 12, Curtis Family Concerts share music with young audiences through interactive, educational presentations. Performances take place in a friendly setting, uniting entertainment with exploration.

The Enchantment Theatre Company has produced original theatre for school groups and families since 2000, when it was established as a non-profit arts organization in Philadelphia. The company presents only original work based on classic stories from children’s literature, using its signature blend of masked actors, pantomime, magic, large-scale puppets, and original music. Building on the more than 30 years of theatrical experience of its artistic directors, Enchantment has quickly become known for high quality imaginative productions, not only in its home city but throughout the United States, Canada, and Asia.

Enchantment has toured its original productions all over the world, appearing each year in 30–40 U.S. states. It has performed in such sophisticated urban arts venues as Lincoln Center in New York City and the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as well as in small town high school auditoriums and performance tents. In Philadelphia, Enchantment has appeared at the Kimmel Center and the Annenberg Center. The company has also toured in Asia six times, performing in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. Enchantment has shared the stage with more than 65 orchestras nationwide in its special symphonic works that pair great stories with great music for the benefit of school and family audiences.

In the 2019–20 school year, the Curtis Institute of Music celebrates 95 years of educating and training exceptionally gifted young musicians to engage a local and global community through the highest level of artistry. With a small student body of about 175, Curtis provides each young musician with an unparalleled education alongside musical peers, distinguished by personalized attention from celebrated faculty and a “learn by doing” philosophy.
