Director of Campus Safety

The Director of Campus Safety (DCS) is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of campus safety and security programs and services, including but not limited to security, environmental health and safety, fire safety, emergency management, parking management and key control. The position ensures that Curtis follows all applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations related to campus safety, and that day-to-day security, public safety functions, and new initiatives are aligned with the Curtis’s strategic direction.

The DCS oversees a team of full-time and part-time outsourced/contracted security staff (currently employed by Allied Universal). The position reports to the Managing Director of Human Resources and works very closely with the Senior VP of Administration and the Associate Dean of Residence Life and Off-campus Housing.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a 24/7/365 campus safety operation, including hiring, training, direction and supervision
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with students, faculty, staff and external customers/constituents
  • Create and manage to an annual departmental budget
  • Collaborate with local officials to address matters of mutual concern
  • Oversee the key/keycard control program for all academic and administrative buildings
  • Serve as primary point of contact with Curtis’s outsourced security provider, Allied Universal
  • Administer, track, and report on trainings for all security staff
  • Coordinate all security tasks and schedules
  • In partnership with staff in Human Resources and Residence Life, coordinate campus safety trainings for staff, faculty and students (active shooter, shelter-in-place, fire drills, etc.)
  • Serves as administrator responsible for facility safety and meeting physical plant federal and local compliance requirements (ADA, OSHA, Clery, PA Act 153, etc.)
  • Oversee shipping and receiving activities
  • Order campus safety supplies and equipment, monitor inventory, and record invoices
  • Ensure Curtis’s compliance with federal, state, and local facility health and safety regulations
  • Work with student services and human resources staff to provide relevant campus safety data for required federal, state, and local education-related filings and reports
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate would possess:
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in safety, security, law enforcement, or related field with a minimum of five years in a supervisory capacity including personnel management; experience in administration of a comprehensive safety and security program; skilled conflict management and resolution skills; knowledge of local and federal laws, rules, codes and currently accepted principles and practices relevant to safety and security operations in an educational or public facility
  • Strong background in emergency management
  • Capacity to balance competing priorities in a complex environment while maintaining a high level of productivity, quality, and accuracy
  • Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet simultaneous deadlines.
  • Interest and experience developing new systems for project management to increase efficiency
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with CCure, Milestone, and/or other campus safety software and technology systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 programs, especially Excel and Word; ability and willingness to learn other software programs as needed

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

Physical Requirements:
  • The ability to remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods of time, as well as the ability to move about the facility (patrolling, performing security checks, etc.) – sometimes rapidly and climbing stairs
  • Using a computer (generating and reviewing reports, etc.) while sitting for extended periods
  • Must also be able to position oneself to maintain and inspect security equipment, including crouching under tables and desks
  • Occasional heavy lifting
  • Good manual dexterity required to use common office equipment (e.g., computers, mobile devices)
Work Schedule:
  • Varied hours/schedule; weekdays 8 am – 5 pm, but night and weekend work may be required to include special events and 24/7 on-call emergency response

Salary Range: $100,000 annually
