Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Composition with Online Modality

The Curtis Institute of Music Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Composition with Online Modality offers highly gifted composers the opportunity to pursue focused studies in their field while extending the opportunity to participate in various professional engagements and large-scale projects away from school during the academic year.

Curtis provides complete and diversified musical training. Students study with distinguished teachers in private lessons and work with noted guest artists in seminars and master classes.

The study of composition is one that can not only retain its educational value through remote lessons but can actually benefit from the multiple teaching modalities that online interaction can provide. Through online teaching, instructors have available to them the resources of the internet in digital scores, recordings, research materials and active editing and playback of student works.

Students enrolled in this two-year program will be expected to complete a large-scale project during the time of their study and performed in their second year. The specifications of this project will be proposed prior to the student’s admission and further defined at the discretion of the chair of the department and the dean. Examples of large-scale projects would include a one-act opera, orchestral concerto, series of connected works, or extended chamber work of greater than twenty-five minutes.

In addition, students enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Composition with Online Modality will be required to produce a substantial online presentation supported with written materials on a musical scholarly topic specific to an applied area of expertise under advisement by one or more faculty members as determined by the composition chair and the dean.
