Jonathan Bailey Holland (Composition '96) Named Dean of the Bienen School of Music

The celebrated composer, Curtis alumnus, and composition faculty member joins Northwestern University in the fall of 2023

Award-winning composer, inspiring educator, community leader, and Curtis alumnus Jonathan Bailey Holland (’96) has been named dean of the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, effective September 1, 2023. Mr. Holland currently serves on the Curtis composition faculty, is the Jack G. Buncher Head of the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music, chairs the department of composition, theory, and history at the Boston Conservatory, and is a founding faculty member of the music composition program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. He has also served as professor of composition at Berklee College of Music.

After receiving his undergraduate degree at Curtis, where he studied composition with the late Ned Rorem, Mr. Holland joined the student body of Harvard University and received his Ph.D. His works have been commissioned and performed by the Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Colorado, Dallas, Detroit, Indianapolis, Memphis, Minnesota, National, Philadelphia, San Antonio, St. Louis, and South Bend symphony orchestras and many other notable ensembles. Throughout his prolific career, he has received honors and awards from the Fromm Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Music Center, ASCAP, and the Presser Foundation, among others.

Mr. Holland will succeed dean and professor Toni-Marie Montgomery at Northwestern.
