Curtis Hosts 2026 Symposium for Women and Nonbinary Bassists

The third annual symposium convened 10 double bassists from across the U.S. for lessons, masterclasses, workshops, and more.

From May 28 to 31, Curtis hosted the third annual Symposium for Women and Nonbinary Bassists, convening 10 double bassists from across the U.S. for lessons, masterclasses, workshops, and more.

Founded in 2024 by bassist Hanxiao Deng (’25) as part of Curtis’ Community Artist Program, the symposium centers Deng’s guiding question: What would it look like to build a space where women and nonbinary bassists could gather, support one another, and thrive?

“I wanted to create a space where community could form naturally—where students could connect with one another and with faculty, outside of competition or hierarchy. With that in mind, we created a schedule that balanced intensive learning with informal shared meals, conversations, and performances.” –Hanxiao Deng

Curtis faculty, as well as members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, joined for events throughout the weekend. The gathering culminated with a free faculty recital on Saturday, May 30, featuring works by Korngold, Chopin, and Beach, among others.
