Andres Sanchez (Cello ’20) Wins First Prize at the 29th Annual Sphinx Competition
Congratulations to Andres Sanchez (Cello ’20) for winning first prize at the 29th Annual Sphinx Competition, held January 21-24, 2026. Sanchez earned the prestigious Robert Frederick Smith Prize of $50,000, which includes solo performance opportunities with major orchestras.
All finalists and semi-finalists also receive access to scholarships and fine instruments through the Sphinx Music Assistance Fund, supporting their continued artistic and professional development.
About the Sphinx Competition
Held annually in Detroit, the national Sphinx Competition provides career advancement opportunities for talented young Black and Latino strings players, with the goal of addressing systemic barriers within the classical music field.
Finalists perform with the professional Sphinx Symphony Orchestra—comprised of leading musicians from around the country—and compete for more than $100,000 in total prizes.
