A native of Atlanta, Ford Mylius Lallerstedt began studying piano at age five. He studied organ with Vernon de Tar at the Juilliard School, where, in 1973, he won both prizes in organ performance and was awarded teaching fellowships in piano and solfège.

Dr. Lallerstedt received his Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Juilliard School. His doctoral research into the notation of polyphonic keyboard music of the Renaissance led to the first complete inventory of all original sources of Iberian keyboard tablature. He studied musicology with Gustave Reese; conducting with Warren Brown; solfège with Mary Anthony Cox; and analysis with Jacob Druckman, Vincent Persichetti, and Roger Sessions. He also studied electronic music with Vladimir Ussachevsky and Milton Babbitt at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center and Schenkerian techniques with Carl Schachter

As a concert organist, Dr. Lallerstedt made his New York debut at Alice Tully Hall in 1979 and has performed in Europe and throughout the United States. He performs throughout the United States as a recital partner and accompanist for mezzo-soprano Brenda Boozer.

Dr. Lallerstedt has been on the faculties of the Juilliard School, State University of New York at Purchase, Mannes College of Music (organ), the Tanglewood Music Center (conducting studies), and the Britt Music and Arts Festival’s Orchestral Fellowship program. He serves on the board of directors of the Coudert Institute Palm Beach and was previously the director of music at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Kisco, N.Y.

Dr. Lallerstedt joined the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in 1973. He conducted the Curtis Chamber Orchestra from 1991 to 2001 and has taught numerous musical studies courses in counterpoint, score-reading, solfège, and music history.
