Betty Whelchel

A Curtis trustee since 2014, Betty Whelchel has had a career in law and public policy, focused on international financial services and cross-border mergers and acquisitions. She started with the U.S. Treasury General Counsel’s office, worked as a lawyer with Shearman & Sterling in New York and Tokyo and served as Global General Counsel for Deutsche Asset Management and U.S. General Counsel for BNP Paris. Before retiring in 2019, she established and headed BNP Paribas’ first U.S. Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs team, based in New York and Washington. Betty has been active in matters related to international financial regulatory policy and corporate governance. She served as chair of the Institute of International Bankers’ Legislative and Regulation Committee and was a member of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation. Betty has received numerous awards, including Legal 500 Individual of the Year in Financial Services and the Burton Awards “Legend in the Law”. She also was a member of the Vestry of Trinity Wall Street, chairing the committee overseeing Trinity’s music program.
