Cristina Cutts Dougherty (Tuba '22) on the Latest Episode of WHYY's "On Stage at Curtis"

Season 17 of WHYY’s acclaimed On Stage at Curtis series continues with a portrait of Cristina Cutts Dougherty (Tuba ’22). The recent Curtis graduate, a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Pretoria, South Africa, entered the school in 2019 and studied with faculty members Craig Knox (Tuba ’89) and Paul Krzywicki.

Ms. Dougherty, a Yamaha Performing Artist and tubist for the all-female ensemble Seraph Brass, discusses her upbringing in South Africa, taking djembe and gumboot dance lessons, breaking gender norms, and defying stereotypes as a tubist in a predominantly male field. She talks about being inspired by pioneering female tubist Constance Weldon and the creation of Ms. Dougherty’s upcoming book, The Resilience Project, a collection of biographical stories and pedagogies detailing the lives and legacies of fourteen female brass musicians from the 1940s to today.
