Paavo Järvi Appointed Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra
Congratulations to Paavo Järvi (Conducting ’88) on his appointment as chief conductor and artistic advisor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO). The internationally acclaimed conductor—celebrated for his compelling symphonic interpretations and advocacy for new music—will assume the role at the start of the 2028–29 season, succeeding current principal conductor Edward Gardner.
“From the first time I heard Paavo Järvi perform in 2023, it was clear that he shared a remarkable musical connection with the London Philharmonic Orchestra,” said David Burke, chief executive of the LPO. “I am immensely proud to announce this new partnership and excited to see it grow as we approach our 2032 centenary.”
About Paavo Järvi
Widely recognized as one of today’s most eminent conductors, Järvi currently serves as music director of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and artistic director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and is both the founder and artistic director of the Pärnu Music Festival and Estonian Festival Orchestra.
Born in Tallinn, Estonia, he studied percussion and conducting at the Tallinn School of Music. He continued his studies at Curtis and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute with Leonard Bernstein.
