About the Performers
Alan Liu, from Xi’an, China, entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2018 and studies guitar with David Starobin and Jason Vieaux. All students at Curtis receive merit-based, full-tuition scholarships, and Mr. Liu is the Gene and Jean Stark Annual Fellow.
Mr. Liu was named one of 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30 in 2016. He won first prize at the 2016 Canadian National Music Competition, the 2015 Northwest Guitar Festival Adult Competition, the 2014 GFA International Youth Competition (Junior Division), and the 2014 Guitare Montreal International Youth Competition. He was also a finalist and prize-winner at the 2014 Michele Pittaluga International Youth Guitar Competition and the 2015 Parkening International Young Guitarist Competition.
Mr. Liu has performed in Canada, the United States, and China, including concerto performances with the Vancouver Symphony and Prince George Symphony. He has appeared as a featured artist at the Montreal International Guitar Festival and the QinLing International Guitar Festival.
Mr. Liu began studying guitar and piano at age five. His other teachers have included Daniel Bolshoy, Ping Jin, Michael Partington, and Xia Yang.
