Korean Art Song
Hangukese: The Korean Ethos
This concert, curated by student Celestia Song, is intended to reflect the collective sentiments of the Korean people through music. The concert develops around two subthemes: “Han (the Bittersweet Sorrow)”, and “Hee (the Purest Joy of Life).”
“Han (한)”: The first part of the concert, which deals with the emotion of Han, consists of repertoires written during the period of colonial oppression. It focuses on the sorrow and suppressed anger that originated from the tyrannical rule of the conquering nation.
“Hee (희)”: The second part of the concert, which deals with the emotion of Hee, consists of repertoires that express the vibrant joy of the Korean people, who never lost hope even in their darkest days. It brings to light the primitive form of joy and the resilient spirit that has shaped today’s Korea.
