Beloved American composer Samuel Barber entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in 1924, in the school’s first year. During his time as a student, he wrote over 50 songs in the style of German Romantic Lieder. Only seven of these songs were ever published, three of which come together to form Barber’s Three Songs, Op. 2. Each song contrasts in emotion and style but ties together to form a comprehensive view of Barber’s compositional approach.

The three selections from Hermit Songs are taken from the ten songs of Barber’s famous cycle. Written in 1953, they are a collection of anonymous poems composed by Irish monks and scholars from the 8th to the 13th centuries. These poems are witty, sharing thoughts and observations of nature throughout.

This program concludes with Brahms‘ Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34. This work is known for the emotional roller-coaster it casts on the listener, moving quickly from anxious to serene, back and forth between movements.

Admission for this performance requires advance registration and is complimentary.
