Though her name and image are visible throughout the halls of Curtis, Mary Louise Curtis Bok has never been the subject of a major biography. That changes this October with the release of A Practical Philanthropist, Senior Archivist Barbara Benedett’s portrait of the life and times of the school’s visionary founder.

Ms. Benedett chronicles Mrs. Bok’s approach to practical philanthropy, a view that benefactors should not simply write out large donation checks but look to actively connect with the underserved. Not only did Mrs. Bok purchase “automobiles and houses, and even clothing and vacations, for those not able to afford such things,” Ms. Benedett writes, but she also funded community-wide projects including public parks, hospitals, libraries, and theaters.
