Young Artist Summer Program

Do composers participate in instrumental opportunities?
Composition students participate in the all-program choir. Composition students will not be assigned to chamber ensembles or four-hand duos.

Can audience members record recitals?
Family members or friends of a student may record the student’s performances, for educational or private use only.
No recordings may be distributed online, including posting on social media accounts.

What financial support is available?
Limited financial assistance is available for the Young Artist Summer Program in 2017. Applicants who wish to be considered for financial assistance are required to submit their applications for the program by January 31, 2017. Those who are accepted to the program will receive notification of any awards by e-mail.
If you wish to be considered for financial assistance, please contact for a simple financial assistance application. You will be required to upload this completed PDF document on the application.
Students and parents are urged to seek financial assistance from local sources such as school music organizations; county, state, or national music education organizations; youth orchestras and bands; music clubs; service clubs (Rotary, Kiwanas, etc.); businesses; local churches; and foundations.

When do I work on solo repertoire?
Orchestral instrumentalists and pianists at the Young Artist Summer Program are assigned new chamber and orchestral works by Curtis Summerfest faculty.

Musicians bring solo repertoire of their choice to private lessons, master classes, and the concerto competition.

Will I perform in a master class?
A few instrumentalists who apply and are accepted to the Young Artist Summer Program will be selected to play at a master class.

The pre-selected participants will be contacted prior to the program with details.
All participants are required to observe master classes specific to their instrument, and are also welcome to observe master classes for other instruments.

I'm a participant and need to contact someone on staff urgently during the program.
There is a Summer Program Assistant on call 24/7, and they are able to reach anyone on staff. Please refer to your check-in material or the postings around Lenfest Hall for the telephone number.

What are the visa and language requirements for international applicants?
International applicants attend Curtis Summerfest on a tourist visa.
There is no language requirement for international applicants. For the best experience, however, we suggest a basic understanding of conversational English.

Can a parent stay in Lenfest Hall with their musician?
Unfortunately, during the Young Artist Summer Program there is no available space in Lenfest Hall for family members of participants.

Can parents sit in on lessons or coachings?
To maximize your child’s experience, all rehearsals, lessons, and master classes at the Young Artist Summer Program are closed to the public, including family members.
Weekly participant recitals are free and open to the public.

What residential leisure activities are available?
The musical schedule at the Young Artist Summer Program is rigorous, offering a true glimpse into conservatory life and making full use of the resources available at Curtis.
Residential staff is available for outings to area shops and restaurants during select breaks and meal times.

Lenfest Hall offers a student lounge equipped with board games, a ping-pong table, couches, and a flat-screen TV for movie nights.

Residential staff offer excursions to some of Philadelphia’s many cultural attractions on Sunday afternoons.
Staff often select activities and locations based on the interests of participants.

May a family member take a participant out for a meal?
If a family member is in town and would like to take the participant out, we ask that the participant confirm they will not miss any required program activities such as a rehearsal or class. Sunday afternoons between 1 and 6 p.m. are a great time to spend time with your participant.
Please contact 24 hours in advance to let us know if you’ll be taking your participant out for a meal or other activity.
