Vocal Quartet Presents Liebeslieder Waltzes in Nationwide Tour and Philadelphia Recital February 9–March 3

PHILADELPHIA—February 7, 2019—Performers from the Curtis Institute of Music embark on a nationwide tour built around Johannes Brahms’s Liebeslieder Waltzes to venues in California, the upper Midwest, and along the eastern seaboard. The performances for Curtis on Tour, the Nina von Maltzahn global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music, begin February 9 and end with a concert as part of the Curtis Presents series on Sunday, March 3 at 3 p.m. in Field Concert Hall.

Each performance features a vocal quartet of students Sage DeAgro-Ruopp (soprano), Anastasiia Sidorova (mezzo-soprano), and Patrick Wilhelm (baritone); and alumnus and prolific operatic tenor Dominic Armstrong (’09). At the piano are Mikael Eliasen, the beloved outgoing artistic director of the Curtis Opera Theatre; and Miloš Repický, vocal coach for Curtis, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Cleveland Orchestra, among others.

As they tour the U.S., they present three different programs, all culminating with the elegant Liebeslieder Waltzes of Johannes Brahms (with piano, four hands). The programs are rounded out by lieder selections from Romantic masters as well as Curtis alumni composers Samuel Barber (’34), Gian Carlo Menotti (’33), and Ned Rorem (’44); operatic favorites; and gems from the American Songbook.

Curtis on Tour is the Nina von Maltzahn global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music. An embodiment of the school’s “learn by doing” philosophy, it offers students real-world, professional touring experience alongside celebrated alumni and faculty.  In addition to performances, musicians offer master classes, interactive programs, and community engagement activities while on tour. Curtis on Tour also facilitates solo performances of Curtis students and alumni with leading orchestras and concert presenters. Since the program was established in 2008, students, faculty, and alumni have performed over 300 concerts in more than 90 cities in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians to engage a local and global community through the highest level of artistry. One of the most selective schools in the United States, Curtis accepts four percent of applicants each year on average.
