Curtis Opera Theatre Presents Don Giovanni at Perelman Theater March 7–10

PHILADELPHIA—February 26, 2019—The Curtis Opera Theatre performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Perelman Theater on March 7, 8, and 9 at 7:30 p.m., and March 10 at 2:30 p.m. The production is led by conductor Karina Canellakis and directed by R. B. Schlather. The first of two such 2018–19 productions, these performances are presented in partnership with Opera Philadelphia and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts as a continuation of the Curtis Opera Theatre at the Perelman series.

Don Giovanni has seduced innumerable women, inspiring admiration, jealousy, and scorn in equal measure. Now the tables are turned on the unrepentant lord, as those he has wronged join forces to stop him—and a statue comes to life, ending his libertine campaign. The “edgy and imaginative young director” (The New Yorker) R. B. Schlather, perhaps best known to Philadelphia audiences for his work on the award-winning The Wake World, part of Opera Philadelphia’s O17 festival, illuminates his distinctive vision of Mozart’s masterwork, while fast-rising conductor and Curtis alumna Karina Canellakis brings her “passion and pathos” (Artsfile) to the podium.

In his director’s note, Mr. Schlather offers his thoughts on the sensitive subject matter of the opera. “In the world of opera we are bound to a long history of practice…I try to free myself of all of that in my work to tap into something alive, happening here and now in the bodies and imaginations of the young people on stage. There’s no question that Mozart’s opera is formally a masterpiece, and that the content, as problematic as it is, fascinates. We’ve all abstractly known a ‘Giovanni,’ who made us feel so much pleasure and pain, and ultimately helped us learn about ourselves.”

Limited tickets are available from Opera Philadelphia Guest Services at operaphila.org or (215) 732-8400.

A Curtis alumna and the newly appointed chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Karina Canellakis (Violin ’04) leads members of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra in this fully-staged production sung in Italian with English supertitles. She worked with the Curtis Opera Theatre for Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro in 2016 and led the Curtis Symphony Orchestra at Verizon Hall in April 2018.  Director R. B. Schlather has previously worked with the Curtis Opera Theatre on Impressions of Pelléas in Fall 2017 and Doctor Atomic in Winter 2016.

Vocal Quartet Presents Liebeslieder Waltzes in Nationwide Tour and Philadelphia Recital February 9–March 3

PHILADELPHIA—February 7, 2019—Performers from the Curtis Institute of Music embark on a nationwide tour built around Johannes Brahms’s Liebeslieder Waltzes to venues in California, the upper Midwest, and along the eastern seaboard. The performances for Curtis on Tour, the Nina von Maltzahn global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music, begin February 9 and end with a concert as part of the Curtis Presents series on Sunday, March 3 at 3 p.m. in Field Concert Hall.

Each performance features a vocal quartet of students Sage DeAgro-Ruopp (soprano), Anastasiia Sidorova (mezzo-soprano), and Patrick Wilhelm (baritone); and alumnus and prolific operatic tenor Dominic Armstrong (’09). At the piano are Mikael Eliasen, the beloved outgoing artistic director of the Curtis Opera Theatre; and Miloš Repický, vocal coach for Curtis, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Cleveland Orchestra, among others.

As they tour the U.S., they present three different programs, all culminating with the elegant Liebeslieder Waltzes of Johannes Brahms (with piano, four hands). The programs are rounded out by lieder selections from Romantic masters as well as Curtis alumni composers Samuel Barber (’34), Gian Carlo Menotti (’33), and Ned Rorem (’44); operatic favorites; and gems from the American Songbook.

Ticket information for Curtis on Tour performances is available through each concert venue or at Curtis.edu/VocalQuartet. Single tickets for the March 3 concert in Philadelphia cost $25 and are available from the Curtis Patron Services Office at (215) 893-7902 or Curtis.edu/Performances.

Curtis on Tour is the Nina von Maltzahn global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music. An embodiment of the school’s “learn by doing” philosophy, it offers students real-world, professional touring experience alongside celebrated alumni and faculty.  In addition to performances, musicians offer master classes, interactive programs, and community engagement activities while on tour. Curtis on Tour also facilitates solo performances of Curtis students and alumni with leading orchestras and concert presenters. Since the program was established in 2008, students, faculty, and alumni have performed over 300 concerts in more than 90 cities in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians to engage a local and global community through the highest level of artistry. One of the most selective schools in the United States, Curtis accepts four percent of applicants each year on average. A tuition-free policy ensures that talent and artistic promise are the only considerations for admission. With a small student body of about 175, Curtis ensures that each young musician receives an education of unparalleled quality, distinguished by personalized attention from a celebrated faculty and a “learn by doing” philosophy. Curtis students hone their craft through than 200 orchestra, opera, and solo and chamber music offerings each year in Philadelphia and around the world.

Rhoslyn Jones Joins the SFCM Faculty

Rhoslyn Jones (Opera ’06), Matthew Worth, Frederica Von Stade, and Marnie Breckenridge were recently appointed to the faculty at San Francisco Conservatory Of Music.

In addition to her critically acclaimed performances at San Francisco Opera, Jones “has maintained strong Bay Area connections through the Bay Area Vocal Program, an organization which she co-founded, and having been a participant in the Merola Opera Program and an Adler Fellow.” SFCM Dean and Chief Academic Officer Jonas Wright expressed that Jones’s “impressive performance career, combined with the outstanding successes her private studio students have achieved will continue to build the vocal performance degree here at SFCM into a powerhouse.”

Career highlights include Musetta in Puccini’s La Boheme with Arizona Opera and Pittsburgh Opera, the title role of Puccini’s Tosca at San Francisco Opera, and the Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro with Vancouver Opera and Opera Santa Barbara. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, she has also served on its faculty, and taught at Sonoma State University. Many of her talented students have been accepted into top-tier institutions and have won major competitions.

“My teachers and mentors trained my voice and nurtured my ambition, enabling me to stand on the greatest opera stages and sing, gratefully and joyfully,” said Jones. “I know that SFCM is the best place I, in turn, can help nurture and realize artists’ goals.”  Read more HERE.
