Clarinet Trio Performs for Curtis on Tour in Latin America June 9–29

Tour stops include a Philadelphia preview, Mexico City, Chile, and first appearances in Peru

PHILADELPHIA—June 6, 2019—Curtis on Tour travels to Mexico City; Lima and Arequipa in Peru; and Temuco, Concepción, Santiago, and Copiapó in Chile from June 14 to 29. A preview performance takes place at Teatro Esperanza in North Philadelphia on June 9 at 2 p.m.

Focused on venues in Central and South America, the tour features works for clarinet trio by Bruch, Mozart, Schumann, and Curtis alumnus Daron Hagen (Composition ’84). Touring artists, all of whom are Curtis alumni, include violist Roberto Díaz (’84), president and CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music, pianist George Xiaoyuan Fu (’16), and clarinetist Tania Villasuso (’19).

The tour begins in Mexico City with performances presented by Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and a special performance of Robert Sierra’s Viola Concerto by Mr. Díaz and Orquesta Juvenil Universitaria Eduardo Mata. Presented by Sociedad Filarmónica de Lima, concerts in Arequipa on June 18 and Lima on June 20 mark Curtis on Tour’s first-ever appearances in Peru. The tour concludes with performances in Temuco, Concepción, Santiago, and Copiapó, Chile. Curtis on Tour last appeared at UNAM and in Chile, Mr. Díaz’s home country, in October 2017.

The artists perform a preview of selections from the tour before their departure in a concert on Sunday, June 9 at 2 p.m. at Teatro Esperanza, located at 4261 N. 5th Street in Philadelphia. This concert is presented by Esperanza Arts Center. Tickets for $10 (admission is free for students and children) are available from the venue at www.esperanza.us.

These performances are part of Curtis on Tour, the Nina von Maltzahn global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music. An embodiment of the school’s “learn by doing” philosophy, it offers students real-world, professional touring experience alongside celebrated alumni and faculty. Since the program was established in 2008, students, faculty, and alumni have performed over 300 concerts in more than 90 cities in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Visit Curtis.edu/CurtisOnTour for more information.
