Vocal Recital: Music by Czech Composers

  • May 19, 2021 @ 12:00 P.M.

Tantalizing melodies influenced by the Czech language

Join all 20 young artists in the Curtis Vocal Studies Department as they explore ideas of identity, love, and the value of music in a full-length recital of songs and arias by five Czech composers.

Savor familiar arias from Bedřich Smetana’s The Bartered Bride and the fairytale magic of Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka, and discover lesser-known gems from the Czech repertoire. Hear songs by Leoš Janáček, who crafted his musical idiom from the language of his native Moravia, and his brilliant disciple Pavel Haas, whose luminous talent was tragically cut short in a Nazi concentration camp; as well as works by Bohuslav Martinů, a contemporary of Haas who found refuge and renown in the United States.
