Graduation Recital: Francis Carr, cello
Cellist Francis Carr kicks off our spring season of student graduation recitals. His performance features three works by J. S. Bach, including the Cello Suite in G major, one of the most transcendent and popular works in the cello repertoire. The performance includes the hymn-like, expressive Caprice in E-flat major by Alfredo Piatti, a protégé of Franz Liszt. He is joined on the final piece by his parents, making this recital a family affair!

Notes from Francis
How did you choose your recital repertoire?
In choosing my repertoire, I tried to pick pieces that were meaningful to me personally and appropriately reflected my years at Curtis, like the Bach suites and the Piatti, however there was also an element of necessity. I knew that most of my recital would have to be solo because of covid restrictions, but I wanted to play at least one piece of chamber music. That is the explanation for the arrangement of the Bach gamba sonata. In correlation, I also saw it as an opportunity to augment the “social media exposure” of my parents, both of whom are decidedly wanting in that department.
What is a favorite memory from your time at Curtis?
I think that many of my happiest memories are my walks to and from school, through the squares and parks and along the rivers; particularly during those few weeks between the endless Philadelphia summers and winters.
