Community Advisor for Curtis Summerfest 2019

Reports to:     Director of Residence Life and Summerfest Manager

Status:           Temporary, Exempt

During the summer, Curtis opens its doors to provide musicians and music lovers opportunities to explore classical music and experience the Curtis Institute of Music’s “learn by doing” philosophy. The Summerfest Office, in conjunction with the Director of Residence Life, is hiring Community Advisors (CAs). CAs live in the same suites as participants in Curtis’ Lenfest Hall and are responsible for mentoring and guidance, leading activities, creating an inclusive environment for all, ensuring participant safety and complying with program rules and regulations. This is an excellent opportunity to strengthen leadership skills, mentor young students, plan and implement social programming, and build effective working relationships during a fun and rewarding summer music program.

Compensation is $11.50/hour. CAs receive on-campus housing (private room within a shared suite) in Lenfest Hall as part of his/her compensation. Meals are provided in Lenfest Hall’s Gould Dining Hall *when programs are in session.*

The CA role must be the highest priority while in the residence for the duration of employment. In addition, CAs will be held to the highest standards of professionalism. Attendance is mandatory for the CA training sessions to be scheduled in May for one full day at Curtis, Lenfest Hall, in addition to the training dates listed below.

    • Program dates: June 9-15, 2019
  • Option 4: Young Artist Summer Program
    • Training and preparation work: July 10–12, 2019
    • Program dates: July 13 – August 3, 2019
    • Wrap up work (flexible): August 4 – 7, 2019

Essential Functions:

  •  Share in the responsibility of making each student, faculty, and program participantfeel welcome on Curtis’ campus. Plan and implement social programming activities for participants. Chaperone and participate in scheduled daytime, evening, and weekend activities.
  •  Play a vital role in presenting Curtis as a hospitable, service-oriented institution. Serve as resource for program participants’ questions and needs.
  • Coordinate program check-in and help students move out after program.
  •  Educate participants on program rules and reinforce their compliance.
  • Communicate with supervisor regularly about participant well-being.
  •  Maintain accurate reporting when needed and other critical paperwork.
  •  Fulfill on-call responsibilities and perform nightly curfew checks. Conduct student floor meetings. Conduct health and safety inspections.
  •  Attend scheduled daily staff meetings.
  •  Assist rehearsal production and proctoring classes.
  •  Perform administrative and office duties as needed. Other duties as assigned.

  • Attention to detail, initiative, and the ability to work well within a team and with a diverse constituency ranging in age, socio-economic background, sexual orientation, racial and/or religious background.
  •  Strong ability to empathize with others in a professional setting.
  • Strong customer-oriented skills.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

This position works closely with Curtis Staff and Faculty and reports directly to the Summerfest Manager and Director of Residence Life. Positions are temporary and do not include benefits.
