Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, Touring and Artist Management (VPTAM), the Artist Manager and Booking Representative will manage and/or co-manage selected artists on the professional artist management roster and will manage one-off professional engagements for current students and recent graduates. The position will also serve as a booking representative for a portfolio of presenters and orchestras across North America, advocating for and booking the department’s artists and tour offerings.

The ideal individual will have experience managing and booking artists, especially emerging professional artists; will have an existing network of relationships with North American presenters of classical music; will have experience in and a strong understanding of classical artist management/representation; will have experience managing projects and producing concerts and/or tours; will have strong written and verbal communication skills; and will have the ability to manage simultaneously multiple priorities. The ideal candidate will have schedule flexibility to work additional hours, attend performances, attend industry conferences, and travel on tour, as required.

About the Touring and Artist Management Department

The Artist Manager and Booking Representative will serve as a key player in an expanding Touring and Artist Management department, which supports three primary artistic functions: artist management for a roster of professional artists (faculty and alumni), Curtis on Tour, and professional engagements for students and recent graduates. The department started its professional artist management initiative with the Dover Quartet in 2020 and continues to expand its roster of professional artists, which are all Curtis faculty or alumni. In addition to this new artist management function, the department continues to oversee Curtis on Tour, the Nina von Maltzahn global touring initiative. An integral component of a Curtis education and an embodiment of the school’s “learn by doing” philosophy, Curtis on Tour ensembles feature students, faculty, and alumni performing together. Since the program was established in 2008, ensembles have performed more than 375 concerts in over 100 cities in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Job Responsibilities

  • Be an ambassador for Curtis and represented artists externally when interacting with presenters, audiences, and other constituents.
  • Serve as a booking representative and account manager for a portfolio of presenters and orchestras; book artist engagements and negotiate all aspects of artist engagements with presenters, including performances and educational/community engagement activities; manage professional relationships with assigned presenters; seek and cultivate new presenter relationships in order to encourage and support ongoing engagements of Curtis on Tour, professional engagements, and represented artists. Booking representation will be focused on the United States and Canada; additional countries/regions may be assigned.
  • Manage or co-manage the professional careers of assigned artists on the professional artist roster, including but not limited to managing career goals and planning, guiding the planning and development of special projects and artistic initiatives (e.g., recordings and media projects, commissioning, artist collaborations), and overseeing the artist’s career trajectory.
  • Work closely with the VPTAM on the selection of student and recent graduates for professional performance engagements; serve as artist manager for professional engagements.
  • Working closely with internal colleagues, manage the development and maintenance of current promotional materials and assets for managed artists and artists performing professional engagements.
  • For confirmed engagements, work with internal colleagues to generate, approve, and send engagement contracts to presenters in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with department colleagues to ensure Overture database is current with regard to artist calendars, engagement details, and presenter data.
  • Remain current on news and trends within the classical music industry, including leadership changes and potential new presenter relationships; report relevant/significant news to the VPTAM in a timely manner.
  • Accompany musicians on assigned tours/engagements to represent Curtis and to provide necessary administrative and logistical support.
  • Attend assigned industry conferences in order to book artists/tours and to cultivate and maintain professional relationships with presenters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and proactive.
  • Experience booking and/or managing classical music artists, especially chamber music, in North America; existing professional relationships/networks in the industry.
  • Schedule flexibility to work additional hours and travel as required. Mature interpersonal skills and ability to handle sensitive, confidential situations and information with poise, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of classical music.
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music, music management, marketing, or business.
  • Foreign language competency a plus.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Routine for office environment. Travel and night/weekend work occasionally required.

Compensation and Benefits

  • $70,000-$80,000 commensurate with experience.
