Curtis Chamber Orchestra Performs All-Mozart Program in United States Tour Dec 5-Jan 21
Five student soloists present violin concertos; Roberto Díaz and Shmuel Ashkenasi perform the magnificent Sinfonia Concertante as part of Curtis on Tour
PHILADELPHIA—December 5, 2016—The Curtis Chamber Orchestra embarks on a nation-wide tour with an all-Mozart program in thirteen performances from December 5, 2016 through January 21, 2017. East-coast venues from New Jersey to Florida and locations throughout California will play host to the conductorless ensemble as they accompany student soloists in Mozart’s five remarkable concertos for violin, and faculty members Shmuel Ashkenasi and Roberto Díaz in the grand Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat Major.
Curtis President Roberto Díaz (Viola ’84) and acclaimed violinist Shmuel Ashkenasi collaborate on the Sinfonia Concertante, a charming masterpiece that highlights and challenges both solo instruments. Five exciting young soloists from within the orchestra—Angela Sin Ying Chan, Abigail Fayette, Brandon Garbot, Hsuan-Hao Hsu, and Stephen Kim—perform Mozart’s complete array of concertos for the violin, each accompanied by fellow students.
The Curtis Chamber Orchestra appears as part of Curtis on Tour, the Nina von Maltzahn Global Touring Initiative. An embodiment of the school’s “learn by doing” philosophy, it offers students real-world, professional touring experience alongside celebrated alumni and faculty. In addition to performances, musicians offer master classes, interactive programs, and community engagement activities while on tour. Curtis on Tour also facilitates solo performances by Curtis students and alumni with professional orchestras and recital series. Since the program was established in 2008, students, faculty, and alumni have performed more than 200 concerts in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
