What will happen to Curtis’s current buildings?

The new facility at 1616 Locust Street will enhance the current facilities; it will not replace them. Curtis remains committed to its historic home on Rittenhouse Square. The buildings at 1718, 1720, and 1726 Locust Street will continue to house Curtis’s recital hall, classrooms, select practice and teaching studios, offices, and meeting and reception rooms. The new facility will ease stress on the current buildings, which will remain integral to learning, performance, and administration at Curtis. Once the new facility is open, the current buildings will be renovated.

Why has Curtis chosen this location?

Situated one block from the current facilities, the new building will create a city campus, completing a “Curtis corridor” along Locust Street from Rittenhouse Square to the Avenue of the Arts, where the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and Curtis Opera Theatre perform regularly at the Kimmel Center. This will allow an easy flow of Curtis traffic for students, faculty, and staff—as well as heightened awareness of Curtis among the general public. And in-ground fiber will connect all of Curtis’s Locust Street buildings, with a further connection to the Kimmel Center’s Internet2 hub.

What is the cost of the new building?

The new building will cost $65 million. Additional endowment funds of $5 million will offset any operating and maintenance costs not covered by revenues from housing, dining, and summer rentals.

When will Curtis open the new facility?

The new building will open in time for the 2011-12 school year.
