Curtis On Tour returns to Asia and Germany this fall with a string sextet, performing in Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei, and Dresden. The tour ensemble—including violist and alumnus Roberto Díaz, president of the Curtis Institute of Music; violinist and alumna Eunice Kim; and current students—play three Romantic masterworks: the Sextet from Strauss’s Capriccio, the Sextet in G major by Brahms, and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT?

What makes great music great? Rob Kapilow will show you with his unique and engaging way of taking you inside the music. Watch and listen as he unravels a piece, slows it down, then reconstructs key passages in ways that reveal what makes a particular composition so extraordinary. Theatermania.com called it “a knockout combination of entertainment and education.” This program features the Curtis 20/21 Ensemble performing Copland’s famous Appalachian Spring Suite.

Curtis faculty cellist Peter Wiley joins the Aizuri Quartet, Curtis's quartet in residence, in a program that includes Schubert's final chamber work, the String Quintet in C major, D. 956.

AIZURI QUARTET

The Aizuri Quartet is string quartet in residence at the Curtis Institute of Music. Its members have studied at Curtis and the Juilliard School; and have participated in the Marlboro and Caramoor festivals as well as the Ravinia Festival's Steans Music Institute, where they were quartet in residence in 2014. The quartet was a finalist in the 2014 Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition. The Aizuri Quartet's members are Miho Saegusa, violin; Zoë Martin-Doike, violin ('13); Ayane Kozasa, viola ('12); and Karen Ouzounian, cello.

In March 2015 the Curtis Chamber Orchestra tours the U.S. in a program featuring three prominent alumni of the Curtis Institute of Music. World-renowned conductor Robert Spano leads the world premiere of a viola concerto by Jennifer Higdon, Curtis composition faculty, performed by violist Robert Díaz (’84), the school’s president. The program also includes three songs composed by Mr. Spano, as well as Prokofiev’s “Classical” Symphony and Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony. The Curtis Chamber Orchestra tours through Curtis On Tour, the school’s global touring initiative.

ABOUT CURTIS ON TOUR

Curtis On Tour is the global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music. An embodiment of the school’s "learn by doing" philosophy, it offers students real-world, professional touring experience alongside celebrated alumni and faculty. In addition to performances, students frequently offer master classes, in-school demonstrations, and other community engagement activities. Since Curtis On Tour was established in 2008, students, faculty, and alumni have traveled to more than 44 destinations in Europe, Asia, and North and South America, with new venues added each year.
