RecitalsThe Student Recital Series offers audiences more than one hundred free public performances of solo and chamber works in Field Concert Hall each season. Seating is on a first-come-first-served basis. Curtis alumni return from around the world to Field Concert Hall for the Alumni Recital Series. Artists donate their services, and proceeds from the concerts directly benefit current Curtis students. Curtis students offer Music in the Galleries monthly at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Enjoy solo and chamber music performed among related works of art. Calendar also lists Curtis at Longwood Gardens, Faculty Recital, Holy Trinity Brown Bag Concerts, and Residency Recital performances. |

at Gould Rehearsal Hall In this lecture/demonstration, the Borromeo Quartet offers a fresh take on chamber music masterworks by revisiting original manuscripts and notations from the composers themselves. The first half of the program features deleted sections from Quartets 1, 2, 5, and 6. In the case of Quartets 1 and 2, so far as we know, these sections of music will be heard in public for the first time. {br} The second half features the original manuscript version of Mendelssohn’s famous string octet. This manuscript is quite different from the version which was eventually published, with notable differences in movements 1, 2, and 4. The published edition was prepared 7 years later.{br} Slide projections and interactive discussions will accompany live performances, with Curtis students joining the Borromeos in the Mendelssohn. CAGE Sonatas and Interludes
CAGE 'Third Construction' Curtis 20/21 and the Curtis Percussion Studio present a portrait of John Cage. The program will focus exclusively on his percussion works from the 1940s, including Third Construction, Amores, Living Room Music, In a Landscape, and arrangements of his Sonatas and Interludes, interspersed with video recorded interview segments with the composer himself. Co-presented by Bowerbird in conjunction with their "Cage: Beyond Silence" citywide festival, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art in connection with their exhibition "Dancing Around the Bride." BRITTEN Owen Wingrave A committed pacifist born into a renowned military family meets a torrent of disapproval over his beliefs in Britten's spellbinding chamber opera based on a short story by Henry James. Owen Wingrave is determined to prove his inner strength to his would-be bride—even if it leads to his own mysterious end. SCHOENBERG Pierrot lunaire, Op. 21 Curtis and the Barnes Foundation invite you to a joint program exploring the language of art and music. At 7:00 p.m. David Ludwig, Gie and Lisa Liem Artistic Chair of Performance Studies, presents a lecture entitled "Drawing Connections: Abstraction in Early 20th-Century Art and Music," which segues into a one hour concert of music by Krzysztof Penderecki and Arnold Schoenberg, performed by Curtis students. Following the program, guests will be given exclusive gallery access to view the Barnes collection.
