Student Activities Student activities are organized and sponsored by the Student
Council with support from the school, Board of Trustees, alumni,
and Friends of Curtis. In addition students pursue musical and
social traditions that date back to the early days of Curtis and to its founder, Mary Louise Curtis Bok.
One of the oldest traditions is the midweek Tea. Every Wednesday
at 3 p.m. throughout the school year, you can join fellow students,
faculty, staff, and their guests in the Gary and Naomi Graffman Common
Room for tea. This unique event offers the entire Curtis community
a break for refreshment and informal conversation.
Another longstanding tradition is the annual Holiday Party, held
every December just before exam week. This festive evening features
seasonal entertainment, refreshments, and dancing to live music in
Field Concert Hall.
Musical events include the Student Recital Series in Field Concert
Hall on most Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings; concerts by the
Curtis Symphony Orchestra and the Curtis Chamber Orchestra; vocal
studies department performances, including fully staged productions
by the Curtis Opera Theatre; master classes given by faculty members
and other distinguished musicians; and other performances that are
announced during the school year.
20/21: The Curtis Contemporary Music Ensemble performs
a concert of works by Elliott Carter on Thursday, May 8
at 8 p.m. in honor of the famed composer's 100th birthday.
The free recital takes place in Field Concert Hall at The Curtis Institute
of Music, and no tickets are required. The program also includes two pieces
by student composers Christopher Rogerson and Ke-Chia Chen. View
the entire program.
Dedicated to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries,
20/21 performs works ranging from important twentieth-century compositions
to newly written pieces not yet part of the core repertoire.
