Many students and faculty depart for military duty (including Zimbalist's son, Efrem, Jr.), reducing the graduating class to 19. During this time, however, a number of notable additions were made to the faculty, including pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski, violinist Ivan Galamian, violist William Primrose and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.
