Strategic Plan 2010-11
In 2008 the Curtis Institute of Music developed a carefully considered long-range Strategic Plan. Inspired by Curtis’s mission to educate and train exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level, the plan supports a bold vision to be the finest music conservatory in the world—the first choice for students who aspire to performance careers.
The Strategic Plan focuses on six areas, listed below, that are critical to success in attaining the vision. Ambitious multiyear goals in each area are supported by strategic steps toward their achievement, expressed as annual strategic goals. A flexible financial projection ensures the school’s financial stability and the excellence of Curtis’s educational program as the plan progresses.
Implementation began with the 2008–09 school year. In the first two years, Curtis achieved significant fund raising successes despite a deeply challenging economic environment. Most of the annual strategic goals were met, while a few initiatives requiring significant new funding were deferred.
In 2010–11 Curtis continued to focus on the core areas of the plan, but engaged in strategic improvisation to respond appropriately to changes in the cultural landscape, the technological environment, and the needs of students. The school adopted new initiatives, consistent with our goals, when these provided unique opportunities for our students.
The many accomplishments of 2010–11 are summarized here.
