Curtis Remembers the Lives of Alumni

Orlando Otey (Composition ’47) died on October 23, 2011. A native of Mexico City, he began playing piano at age two. He toured Mexico at age five and Europe at age seven. A composer, he received his doctorate in music from and joined the faculty of the University of Mexico in 1942 at age seventeen. He studied composition with Menotti at Curtis in 1946-47. Mr. Otey continued represented the United States at the Chopin Centennial Celebration Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland in 1949. He taught at the Wilmington Music School from 1965 and served as its Executive Director from 1966 to 1970. He continued to teach privately from his home until a few months before his death. Mr. Otey is survived by Diane, his wife of thirty-seven years; daughter, Olivia Brady; son, Alex Otey; stepson, Nathaniel Reed; and three grandsons, Jason Brady, Phillip Otey, and Patrick Otey.
