Final Three Concerts of the Curtis Summerfest Faculty Recital Series Feature Distinguished Chamber Musicians on July 21 and 28; August 3

PHILADELPHIA, PA—July 19, 2017—The Curtis Summerfest Faculty Recital Series closes the summer with three chamber music recitals in July and August. The remarkable artists of the Curtis Summerfest Faculty, many of them Curtis alumni, perform a variety of repertoire—from beloved classics to the music of today—in the timeless setting of Field Concert Hall. “A wonderful jolt of established Curtis insiders with outside talent” (Philadelphia Inquirer), the recital series is now in its third year.

On Friday, July 21 at 7 p.m., the featured artists include Toby Appel (Viola ’70), Garrett Arney, Matthew Duvall, Natalie Helm (Cello ’11), Ieva Jokubaviciute (Piano ’00), Patrick Kreeger (Organ ’13), Desirée Ruhstrat (Violin ’91), and Mari Yoshinaga (Timpani and Percussion ’12). Contemporary works Catfish by Mark Applebaum and Trio by Jonathan Bailey Holland (Compostition ’96) stand alongside classics of the romantic era by Dvorák (Carnival Overture, transcribed for organ) and Schumann (Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 47).

On Friday, July 28 at 7 p.m., Soo Bae (Cello ’01), Anthea Kreston (Violin ’93), Heather Miller Lardin (Double Bass ’96), Peter Miyamoto (Piano ’92), Sharon Wei (Viola ’04), and Amy Yang (Piano ’06) join forces in a program of music for piano and strings, with selections by Brahms, Janácek, Hindemith, Dragonetti, and David Ludwig (Composition ’01). Dr. Ludwig is the artistic director of Curtis Summerfest, as well as a member of the composition faculty and the Gie and Lisa Liem Dean of Artistic Programs and Performance at Curtis.

On Thursday, August 3 at 7 p.m., Toby Appel (Viola ’70), Heather Conner (Piano ’97), Steven Copes (Violin ’94), Rebecca Harris, Barbora Kolá?ová (Violin ’12), Katherine Needleman (Oboe ’99), Wilhelmina Smith (Cello ’09), Mimi Stillman (Flute ’99), Dmitri Tymoczko, Adam Unsworth, Amy Yang, and Yao Guang Zhai (Clarinet ’09) deliver the closing performance of the Curtis Summerfest Faculty Recital Series. This final concert features Saint-Saën’s Caprice sur des airs Danois et Russes, Op. 79, for woodwinds and piano, Brahms’s Horn Trio in E-flat major, Op. 40, and Princeton University faculty composer Dmitri Tymoczko’s The Eggman Variations.
