Curtis 20/21 Ensemble Performs at NYC's Miller Theatre October 10
The Curtis Institute of Music's contemporary ensemble presents works by three young Curtis composers
PHILADELPHIA—October 4, 2016—The Curtis 20/21 Ensemble travels to Miller Theatre at Columbia University to present a program of contemporary music written by their composer peers on Monday, October 10 at 6 p.m. This concert is part of Miller Theatre’s Pop-Up Concert Series of hour-long early-evening performances by today’s best musicians. The audience sits onstage with the performers at these first-come, first-served free concerts.
The program presents three pieces by Curtis student composers and recent graduates. Emily Cooley, Nick DiBerardino, and Rene Orth (’16) will each introduce their pieces from the stage. After the performances David Ludwig, artistic director of the Curtis 20/21 Ensemble, will facilitate an onstage conversation with all three composers. Ludwig is on the composition faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he also serves as Gie and Lisa Liem Dean of Artistic Programs and Performance.
Flexible in size and scope, the Curtis 20/21 Ensemble performs a wide range of music from the 20th and 21st centuries, including works by Curtis students and alumni. The ensemble has appeared at major U.S. venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, and has presented concert portraits of iconic composers in residence John Corigliano, George Crumb, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Steven Stucky, among others. Of the ensemble’s Joan Tower portrait program, the New York Times wrote, “Ms. Tower could hardly have hoped for more passionate performances.”

Emily Cooley, from Milwaukee, entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2014 and studies composition with Richard Danielpour. Her orchestral works have been performed by the Minnesota, Louisville, Milwaukee, Berkeley, Sioux City, and Eastern Connecticut symphony orchestras; the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra; and numerous university orchestras. She has been a fellow at the Norfolk New Music Workshop, Wellesley Composers Conference, CULTIVATE at Copland House, and the Cabrillo Conductors/Composers Workshop. In 2015, Ms. Cooley was awarded a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Recent commissions have come from the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival, HOCKET piano duo, and the Louisville Orchestra. Ms. Cooley’s upcoming projects include a new work for the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and an eight-track cello piece for renowned American cellist Ashley Bathgate, to be recorded and released on an album in 2017. In 2012, Ms. Cooley co-founded Kettle Corn New Music, a new music presenting organization in New York City, and currently serves as its director of publicity.
Ms. Cooley earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University, where she was awarded the Louis Sudler Prize for Excellence in the Creative Arts; and a master’s degree in composition from the USC Thornton School, where she was named Outstanding Composition Graduate. She has studied with Kathryn Alexander, John K. Boyle, Donald Crockett, Stephen Hartke, Andrew Norman, David Ludwig, and Jennifer Higdon. Ms. Cooley holds the Anthony B. Creamer III Fellowship at Curtis.
Nick DiBerardino, from Westport, Conn., entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2015 and studies composition with David Ludwig. His music has received recognition from ASCAP, the Boston New Music Initiative, the Music Teachers’ National Association, the National Federation of Music Clubs, the New York Art Ensemble, PARMA Recordings, and the New York Youth Symphony. His score for Scholastic’s film and audiobook adaptation of John Klassen’s This Is Not My Hat received an AudioFile Earphones Award. In 2016, he was selected by the American Composers Forum to participate in the prestigious Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute. Mr. DiBerardino is currently a composer-in-residence for the Luzerne Music Center, where he serves on the composition and theory faculty.
Among his academic honors are a Rhodes Scholarship, the Edward T. Cone Memorial Prize in composition from Princeton University, and the Frances E. Osborne Kellogg Memorial Prize from Yale University. He has attended the Bowdoin International, highSCORE, and soundSCAPE music festivals; as well as the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Brevard Music Center, and the European American Musical Alliance.
Mr. DiBerardino holds an A.B. degree from Princeton University, a M.Phil. degree from Oxford University, and a M.Mus. degree from Yale University. His former teachers include Martin Bresnick, Aaron Jay Kernis, David Lang, and Christopher Theofanidis at the Yale School of Music; Robert Saxton at Oxford University; Steven Mackey and Dmitri Tymoczko at Princeton University; and Jennifer Higdon at the Curtis Institute of Music. Mr. DiBerardino holds the Peter King Fellowship at Curtis.
Rene Orth is a composer originally from Dallas, Texas. Her music has been described as “whimsical, spiky, sometimes show-bizy, always dramatic, reflective, rarely predictable, and often electronic” (Musical America). She currently serves as Opera Philadelphia’s sixth composer-in-residence.
Recent and upcoming projects include commissions from the Festival d’Aix en Provence Academie, Women’s Sacred Music Project, the Louisville Orchestra, and the Barnes Foundation/Aizuri Quartet. Her most recent chamber opera, Empty the House (librettist Mark Campbell), received its staged premiere with the Curtis Opera Theater in a sold-out run in January 2016. The piece was also selected to be a part of Fort Worth Opera’s FRONTIERS show case in May.
Ms. Orth is a recipient of a 2016 OPERA America Discovery Grant for Female Composers, supported by the Virginia B Toulmin Foundation, which will help provide funding for the development of Machine, a new chamber opera with librettist Jason Kim. In 2014 she was commissioned by Washington National Opera/American Opera Initiative Program for a chamber opera, An American Man (librettist Jason Kim), which premiered at the Kennedy Center. Other previous commissions and performances have come from the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, the Dover Quartet, the Rock School of Dance, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival and the Pennsylvania Ballet. She has held residencies at the artist colonies Yaddo and Virginia Center for Creative Arts.
Ms. Orth is a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. Past teachers and mentors include David Ludwig, Mikael Eliasen, Jennifer Higdon, Richard Danielpour, Steve Rouse, and Brandon Goff. She earned an M.M. in Music Composition at the University of Louisville as a Moritz von Bomhard Fellow and holds degrees from MediaTech Institute and Rhodes College.
