Corrado Rovaris Leads the Curtis Symphony Orchestra on October 9 at Verizon Hall
A Russian classic pairs with quirky French selections in the orchestra’s season debut
PHILADELPHIA, PA – October 5, 2016 – Corrado Rovaris, Opera Philadelphia’s Jack Mulroney Music Director, leads the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and members of the Curtis Opera Theatre in an electrifying season debut on Sunday, October 9 at 3 p.m. in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center.
The toys and furnishings of a child’s room spring to life as members of the Curtis Opera Theatre perform a semi-staged version of Ravel’s colorful and quirky one-act opera, L’Enfant et les sortilèges, with stage direction by Christopher Mirto. Pierre Boulez’s restrained modernist masterwork, Notations, led by conducting fellow Conner Gray Covington, gives way to the emotional and majestic Pictures at an Exhibition, with Corrado Rovaris once more at the helm. Mussorgsky’s quintessential depiction of painting in musical form progresses through petty squabbles and frantic scenes to arrive at a glorious finale.
Three-concert subscriptions start at $15 and are available from the Curtis Patron Services Office, Curtis.edu/Tickets or (215) 893-7902. Single tickets start at $5 and can be purchased at the Kimmel Center Box Office, Kimmelcenter.org or (215) 893-1999. This concert is part of the 2016–17 series of Jack Wolgin Orchestral Concerts.
A “collective marvel” (Philadelphia Inquirer), the Curtis Symphony Orchestra embodies the sheer joy of music-making. Honing their craft under celebrated conductors, 100 young musicians perform with a fresh exuberance that makes each work new. Recent visiting conductors include Vladimir Jurowski, Marin Alsop, Osmo Vänskä, Simon Rattle, Robert Spano, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Curtis’s mentor conductor for the Rita E. Hauser Conducting Fellowship Program. This professional training has enabled Curtis alumni to assume prominent positions in America’s leading orchestras, as well as esteemed orchestral, opera, and chamber ensembles around the world.
