PHILADELPHIA—May 19, 2016—"Both a conservatory and a buzzword…known for taking the best music students in the world" (Washington Post), the Curtis Institute of Music has trained acclaimed performers like Hilary Hahn, Leonard Bernstein, and Lang Lang during its 90-year history. Musicians from this renowned school tour Europe in May and June, performing in Alicante and Teulada, Spain; and Berlin, Dresden, Munich, and Bremen, Germany. The program for each concert showcases music for strings, clarinet, and soprano, featuring works by Brahms, Bruch, Messiaen, Mozart, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, and Curtis faculty member David Ludwig ('01).

These performances are part of Curtis on Tour, recently named the Nina von Maltzahn Global Touring Initiative in recognition of an extraordinary $55 million gift from Curtis Board Chair Nina von Maltzahn. The performers include Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient Jose Franch-Ballester ('04) a sought-after clarinet soloist and chamber musician; Ayane Kozasa ('12), winner of the 2011 Primrose International Viola Competition and a member of the Aizuri Quartet; and Curtis students Heather Stebbins, soprano; Zachary Mowitz, cello; Stephen Tavani, violin; and Chelsea Wang, piano.

The European tour kicked off in Spain with a performance in Alicante on May 18 at the Auditorio de Diputación de Alicante. Concerts follow in Teulada on May 19 at the Auditori Teulada Moraira and in Moncofa on May 20 at the Local Polifuncional Moncofa.

The group then travels to Germany for performances in Berlin on May 22 at the Konzerthaus Berlin, in Dresden May 24 and 25 at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber, in Munich on May 30 at the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche, and in Bremen on June 2 at the Bremer Obere Rathaushalle.

In addition to performances, the musicians from Curtis will teach in the community at many stops on the tour, including masterclasses at the Hochschule and Landesgymnasium für Musik in Dresden. They will also work with students at the Hochschule in Bremen, continuing a relationship with Curtis musicians that began earlier this season with a visit from the Aizuri Quartet, Curtis’s string quartet in residence. This educational component allows Curtis on Tour to connect more deeply with the community and shares the artistry of Curtis musicians with students in Spain and Germany. It also serves as a valuable teaching opportunity for Curtis students.

"One of the world’s finest music academies" (BBC Culture), the Curtis Institute of Music pairs tradition and innovation, educating exceptionally gifted young musicians as artist-citizens who engage a local and global community through music-making of the highest caliber. Each year 175 students come to Curtis, drawn by a tuition-free, performance-inspired learning culture. In this intimate environment, they are nurtured by a celebrated faculty and inspired by the school's distinctive "learn by doing" approach, offering more than 200 concerts each year in Philadelphia and around the world. Since Curtis on Tour was established in 2008, students, faculty, and alumni have traveled to more than 50 destinations in Europe, Asia, and North and South America, with new venues added each year.
