Featuring the world premiere of RIPEFG for string quartet by Curtis alumnus Yevgeniy Sharlat, commissioned for Curtis on Tour
PHILADELPHIA, PA—March 11, 2016—Praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as being "in full possession of that most elusive of string quartet qualities: the balance between charisma of the individual and cohesion of the collective," the Aizuri Quartet tours the country March 12–26 with Michael Rusinek, principal clarinet of the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Quartet in residence at Curtis, the Aizuri Quartet has received accolades around the world for their "gracefulness, expression, and refinement" and "explosive power" (Beethoven 96.5FM, Chile). As part of Curtis on Tour, the quartet performs with Curtis faculty member and alumnus Michael Rusinek at the Aspen Music Festival and School (March 12); Wassermann Festival at Utah State University (March 14); Music in the Vineyards in American Canyon, Ca. (March 19); Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla, Ca. (March 21); and Mondavi Center in Davis, Ca. (March 26).
The program features the premiere of RIPEFG for string quartet, written by Russian-American composer and Curtis alumnus Yevgeniy Sharlat for Curtis on Tour, performed alongside Mozart's Clarinet Quintet in A major and Sibelius's poignant String Quartet in D minor ("Voces intimae").
In his program notes for RIPEFG, Yevgeniy Sharlat writes, "Soon after starting work, I lost someone who meant a great deal to me—my former student at the University of Texas, fellow composer, dear friend, melodica virtuoso, maverick artist, and a real mensch Ethan Frederick Greene. His death paralyzed me for months, so I couldn't write. Instead, I listened to his music. When I resumed work, it felt as though we had switched places, and Ethan was now my teacher looking over my shoulder, urging me to be more patient with musical material.
"On the surface, there are two ways in which Ethan left a mark on this quartet: the monogram EFG that bookends the second movement and the use of melodica—an instrument Ethan insisted on bringing to our lessons. But there may also be countless others, less conscious ones, buried deep in the score."
An embodiment of the school's "learn by doing" philosophy, Curtis on Tour brings the world-renowned artistry of the Curtis Institute of Music across the country and around the globe. Since Curtis on Tour was established in 2008, students, faculty, and alumni have traveled to more than 50 destinations in Europe, Asia, and North and South America, with new venues added each year. Curtis on Tour is generously funded by Nina von Maltzahn through the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation. For more information, visit www.curtis.edu/CurtisonTour.
A top prizewinner in the 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in London, the Aizuri Quartet is currently the string quartet in residence at the Barnes Foundation, as well as Curtis. The quartet has appeared in various venues throughout Philadelphia, including Field Concert Hall, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, World Cafe Live, and on WRTI's musician-hosted radio special Philadelphia Music Makers; and is featured in the Curtis-Coursera online course The World of the String Quartet. Highlights of the 2014–15 season include performances in Paris, Dresden, Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City. Formed in 2012 and comprising graduates of the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute, the Aizuri Quartet was the resident ensemble of the 2014 Ravinia Festival's Steans Music Institute.
Michael Rusinek joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 1998 as principal clarinet. He has also performed as principal clarinet with the orchestras of Philadelphia and St. Louis, the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Canada; and as assistant principal clarinet of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Mr. Rusinek has often been a concerto soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony, where in 2008 he premiered a new concerto by Alan Fletcher. He has performed as a soloist and recitalist throughout Canada, the United States, and Israel, including appearances with the Belgrade and Czech philharmonics and the Toronto Symphony. He joined the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in 2012.
