Curtis Launches Spring Chamber Music Festival at Saint Mark's Church April 15 through May 3
Student Recital Series expands with three weeks of free lunchtime recitals
(March 25, 2013) This spring at Curtis, chamber music overflows beyond the usual venues and into the magnificent sanctuary of neighboring Saint Mark's Church (1625 Locust Street), with free lunchtime concerts in April and May. For three weeks beginning April 15, student recitals take place on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 12:45 p.m.
The new spring chamber music festival is an expansion of Curtis's famed Student Recital Series, which presents over 100 free performances annually to the Philadelphia community and continues its celebrated legacy as the preeminent concert stage for emerging musical leaders.
In contrast to the ongoing evening recitals in historic Field Concert Hall and the new Gould Rehearsal Hall, these daytime concerts at Saint Mark's offer a mid-day music break for Philadelphians. Patrons are invited to bask in the glorious architecture and acoustics of Saint Mark's as Curtis musicians share their extraordinary talent.
Programs will feature works for strings, winds, brass, voice, piano, and organ ranging from time-honored masterworks to the music of today, including world premieres by Curtis student composers.
The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. One of the world's leading conservatories, Curtis provides its 165 students with full-tuition scholarships and personalized attention from a celebrated faculty. The school's distinctive "learn by doing" approach has produced an impressive number of notable artists since its founding in 1924. Curtis alumni hold principal chairs in every major American orchestra, and each season they are featured as guest soloists with the world's leading orchestras, opera houses, and chamber music series.
Curtis's innovative programs encourage students to perform often and hone 21st-century musical skills, and the school's facilities offer superb spaces for music-making, as well as state-of-the-art technologies to enhance learning. Students perform internationally with Curtis On Tour in addition to more than 150 performances in and around Philadelphia each year. When they graduate, they become musical leaders, making a profound impact on music around the globe.
