(October 5, 2011) A new season of On Stage at Curtis, featuring performances by today's finest young classical musicians at the Curtis Institute of Music, begins on Sunday, October 9.

New episodes air in on WHYY-TV (Channel 12) every Sunday at 6 p.m. Programs are repeated Wednesdays at 8 p.m. and Fridays at 9 p.m. on Y Arts (digital channel 12.2, Comcast Channel 257, FiOS 474). View the complete season schedule.

On Stage at Curtis includes performances from the weekly Student Recital Series and interviews with Curtis students and faculty. The premiere episode on Sunday, October 9 at 6 p.m. features an evening of opera and song by the Curtis Vocal Studies Department.

Rising musicians emerge as leaders of their generation through the Student Recital Series, which offers more than 100 free performances annually, and WHYY selects some of the finest for broadcast each year. Other highlights of the new season include graduation recitals by piano, flute, violin, and cello students; performances by the school's contemporary music ensemble; and an oratorio recital. The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. One of the world's leading conservatories, Curtis is highly selective and provides full-tuition scholarships to all of its 165 students. In this intimate environment, students receive personalized attention from a celebrated faculty. A busy schedule of performances is at the heart of Curtis's distinctive "learn by doing" approach. This philosophy has produced an impressive number of notable artists since the school's founding in 1924, from such legends as Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber to current stars Jonathan Biss, Juan Diego Flórez, Alan Gilbert, Hilary Hahn, Jennifer Higdon, and Lang Lang.

WHYY is the Philadelphia region's prime public media service, providing news when you need it, entertainment when you want it, and education when it counts--on TV, radio, the web, mobile devices, and in the community.
