Jaime Laredo (Violin '59) and Friends Perform on the Alumni Recital Series Dec 11

[PDF format]

(December 1, 2011) The Alumni Recital Series, which brings distinguished alumni back to Curtis, continues on Sunday, December 11 at 3 p.m. with a performance by renowned violinist Jaime Laredo ('59). He is joined by his Curtis colleagues, family, and friends, including violinists Pamela Frank ('89), Soovin Kim ('99), Jennifer Koh ('02), Susie Park ('04), and Bella Hristova ('08); violists Steven Tenenbom ('79) and Hsin-Yun Huang ('92); pianist Benjamin Hochman ('01); and cellists Sharon Robinson and Keith Robinson ('84).

In over five decades as a chamber musician, soloist, conductor, and recitalist, Mr. Laredo has performed with some of the top ensembles and musicians of the day. He has appeared globally with the Chicago, Boston, and London symphonies, as well as the New York, Los Angeles, and Royal philharmonics and the Philadelphia Orchestra. For fifteen years, he was violist of a piano quartet with Emanuel Ax, Isaac Stern, and Yo-Yo Ma. Mr. Laredo is director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of the Brandenburg Ensemble, Chamber Music at the Y series in New York, and Linton Chamber Music Series in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is active in the Marlboro and Aspen Music Festivals and has been involved with numerous other festivals worldwide.

The recital takes place in Field Concert Hall at the Curtis Institute of Music, 1726 Locust Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are $28 and are available from the Curtis Ticket Office at (215) 893-7902 or www.curtis.edu. Artists on the Alumni Recital Series donate their services, and proceeds from the concerts directly benefit current Curtis students.

In celebration of the school's 2011-12 Appassionato season, ticket holders are invited to a special Curtis Tea at 1:45 p.m. in Lenfest Hall, 1616 Locust Street. A tradition begun by Mary Louise Curtis Bok, the school's founder, Tea typically takes place every Wednesday afternoon when students, faculty, and staff gather for refreshments and informal conversation. On Sunday, December 11, ticket holders will be able to experience Tea for themselves prior to the recital.

The Alumni Recital Series is coordinated by the Alumni Society of Greater Philadelphia and the Alumni and Parent Relations Office, who work together each year to decide how proceeds from the recital series can be most beneficial to the students. In recent years contributions have been made toward the purchase of student tickets to Philadelphia Orchestra concerts, acquisitions for the library, the student travel fund, and instrument repairs.

The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. One of the world's leading conservatories, Curtis is highly selective and provides full-tuition scholarships to all of its 165 students. In this intimate environment, students receive personalized attention from a celebrated faculty. A busy schedule of performances is at the heart of Curtis's distinctive "learn by doing" approach. This philosophy has produced an impressive number of notable artists since the school's founding in 1924, from such legends as Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber to current stars Jonathan Biss, Juan Diego Flórez, Alan Gilbert, Hilary Hahn, Jennifer Higdon, and Lang Lang.
