[PDF format]

(February 18, 2011) How do you make a sound on a flute? Why do you need a reed to play the clarinet? What's bigger, an oboe or a bassoon? Kids learn about the woodwind family with PECO Family Concerts at the Curtis Institute of Music on Sunday, February 27 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

During each one-hour program, Curtis students team up with children in the audience to demonstrate various woodwind instruments. Following the introductions, Curtis students perform Prokofiev's children's classic Peter and the Wolf, arranged for woodwind quintet and narrator. The concerts are best enjoyed by children ages five and older.

The PECO Family Concerts take place in Field Concert Hall at the Curtis Institute of Music, 1726 Locust Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are $5 for adults and free for children twelve and under. For tickets or more information, contact the Curtis Ticket Office at (215) 893-7902 or www.curtis.edu. The PECO Family Concert Series is sponsored by PECO, an Exelon Company.

The family concerts are part of the Curtis Community Engagement Program, which shares classical music with young people and others in the community who may not otherwise have access to it. Curtis students also provide interactive educational presentations for area schools, hospitals, senior centers, and community venues through the Community Engagement Program.

Curtis receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
