[PDF format]

(October 19, 2010) Introduce kids to the violin and its friends at the Curtis Institute of Music’s PECO Family Concerts: Introduction to the String Family on Sunday, November 7 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Field Concert Hall at Curtis, 1726 Locust Street.

During each one-hour program, Curtis students team up with kids in the audience to demonstrate the violin, viola, cello, and double bass and share their experiences as musicians. The concerts are best enjoyed by children ages five and older.

A special guest joins the students: Joseph Conyers, the newly appointed assistant principal bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra and a 2004 Curtis graduate. Committed to education and community engagement since his days at Curtis, Mr. Conyers has gone on to develop education programs with the Atlanta Symphony and Project 440 in Savannah.

Tickets are $5 for adults and free for children twelve and under. For tickets or more information, contact the Curtis Ticket Office at (215) 893-7902 or www.curtis.edu. The PECO Family Concert Series is sponsored by PECO, an Exelon Company.

The family concerts are part of the Curtis Community Engagement Program, which shares classical music with young people and others in the community who may not otherwise have access to it. Curtis students also provide interactive educational presentations for area schools, hospitals, senior centers, and community venues through the Community Engagement Program.

The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. One of the world’s leading conservatories, Curtis is highly selective and provides full-tuition scholarships to all of its 164 students.

Curtis receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
