Curtis Mourns the Loss of Former Faculty Member Abe Torchinsky
The Curtis Institute of Music mourns the loss of Abe Torchinsky, faculty member from 1967 to 1972, who passed away this week at the age of eighty-nine. A Philadelphia native, Mr. Torchinsky graduated from Curtis in 1941 and was a member of the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini from 1946 until 1949, when he became principal tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra. After retiring from the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1972, he became a faculty member at the University of Michigan. The Curtis Institute of Music extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Torchinsky's family, friends, colleagues, and former students.
